Any suggestions for Japanese Club activities?

November is almost there and we have to plan for our next Japanese Club activity. Any suggestions?

Post here your suggestions so that we can talk about it in all our Japanese classes.

Halloween in Japan

Question: Do they celebrate Halloween in Japan?

Answer: No, not yet.
Is “not yet” a strange answer? Well, to be more specific, Halloween is not a traditional Japanese holiday or festival, but like many other customs from the west it is slowly working its way into Japanese modern society.

The average Japanese person will almost certainly know of Halloween. Most would be able to say it is in October. However, fewer would be able to pin the day to the 31st. Even less have likely taken part in a Halloween party, unless they have friends from North America or Britain, belong to some kind of eikaiwa (English conversation school), or live in Kawasaki city (where there was a Halloween parade of about 3,000 people last year). However, like Christmas, Halloween has been increasingly imported to Japan through TV, movies, and by companies as a fun way to promote and/or sell services and merchandise. Eikaiwas use Halloween as means to get children interested in western language study.

Tokyo Disney is doing a promotional Halloween theme event throughout September and October. Baskin & Robbins 31 is offering a “Halloween Sundae” this October. Japanese candy-makers are now starting to package treats with Halloween themes, too.

Halloween decorations are sold in small quantities in the seasonal sections of large Japanese department stores, such as JUSCO – right next to their Christmas displays. Costumes can be found at toy stores and variety shops.

Lastly, there are a couple things to not expect from any sort of Halloween in Japan: door-to-door trick-or-treating and real pumpkin carving - typical American-style pumpkins often cost more than 3,000 yen, or about $30. Also, don’t expect any sort of Halloween-related events to happen on October 31st either. The weekend or two before the 31st is more likely. Kawasaki’s Halloween parade was held on Sunday, the 26th, last year. While Halloween is not truly celebrated in Japan (yet), one can still have a fun time with it in the country (but please don’t have that fun time on public trains, which has been problematic in the past).

Today is the last day for TERM 1!!!

みなさん こんにちは!!!!

You did it!!! Today is the last day of the term.

Lots of people came to hand in their late homework and also to retake quizzes. I could see lots of improvement!! Good job, guys!!!

Japanese 1

Finished Chapter 1 and 2 and they have learned all the Hiragana!!! We just had our last Hiragana quiz and the average was 12 out of 15!!!! I am so proud of you guys!!!!

Japanese 2

Finished Chapter 1, learned Kanji for numbers and days of the week and took the big test and you guys did pretty well. The average was 25 out of 30!!!!!!

Japanese 3

Finished Chapter 1, learned the difference between informal and formal Japanese, took the big Kanji test (All the Kanji from Japanese 2, total 121 Kanji) and the big Chapter 1 test.
They learned 12 new Kanji from Chapter 1 and lots of new and hard grammar.

Average for Kanji Test 32 ou of 40.
Average for Chapter 1 test 31 out of 40.

1/3 of the class skipped Japanese 2 and most of them are following pretty well. Those who feel that you are still struggling, make sure to come and talk to me before class so that we can come up with some learning strategies. I am here to help you guys!!!!!!!!! I'd love to help ANYONE who wants to learn!!

Japanese 4

Since we just got our textbook end of September, we did lots of review from Japanese 3, practiced Kanji from Japanese 2 and 3 (total 219 Kanji), did some practice using AP tests exercises and watched Japanese drama. We finally started Chapter 1 from our book and they learned the 3 types of KEIGO (Polite Japanese) and the difference between there. Japanese 1 & 2 focuses on Desu & Masu style, Japanese 3 informal Japanese and Japanese 4 Business Japanese.

Average for Big Kanji test 34 out of 42

I know that it has been a big step to some of you guys, but I can see that everyone is trying very hard to suceed in this class. Thank you for all your example!!!

ESL

After observing and testing everyone, we divided our class in low and high intermediate.
They presented about a movie they liked everything in English and we discussed a little about each movie.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR WORKING SO HARD DURING FIRST TERM!!!!!

SOME ADVICE FOR TERM 2

1) WHEN YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK, EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOME PARTS, TRY TO DO IT!!!! NEVER GIVE UP!!! REMEMBER THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME IS TO SEE EVERYONE TRYING AND NOT TO DO THE HOMEWORK PERFECTLY. IF YOU DON'T TRY YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW AND WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW. SOMETIMES YOU THINK YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, BUT THERE ARE ALWAYS SOME THINGS YOU KNOW.

2) TURN IN ANY ASSIGNMENT ON TIME!!!!!!!

3) CHECK OUR BLOG DAILY TO SEE YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!!

4) BRING YOUR BOOKS, NOTEBOOKS AND PENCIL/PENS. THOSE COUNT TOWARD YOUR DAILY GRADE.

5) TAKE NOTES IN CLASS! AS I MENTIONED IN CLASS, THE EXPLANATION YOU HAVE IN YOUR BOOK SOMETIMES IS COMPLICATED, SO WRITE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK THE WAY YOU UNDERSTAND FROM WHAT I EXPLAINED IN CLASS.

がんばってください!!!!! (Good luck)
