Important Announcement

After we come back from Winter break, we will only have 2 more weeks by the end of the term that ends at January 14th. I think I announced in class that we would have only one week, but we actually have 2. However, this two weeks will fly by if you don't take the action to improve your grades.

Things you should do during the break:

1) Check your grades in skyward and see if you have any homework we forgot to turn in.

2) If you have a couple of quizzes you didn't do well, choose one to retake. I accept one retake per term.

3) Work on your movie project!!! Either start memorizing your script and/or start filming. Remember that the editing part takes most of the time, so if you don't start soon you will be in trouble.
The deadline for the movies are:
Japanese 1 - Feb 10th
Japanese 2, 3 and AP - Feb 11th

I AM NOT going to accept any movie after the deadline. This will be your biggest project for third term, so if you you don't turn in on time you'll get a zero!

I really want everyone to succeed in this class, so anything you need help, don't hesitate to come and talk to me!!!! I can help you to find ways to improve your grades!!!!

Thanks everyone for all your hard work and see all of you in 2 weeks!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Visualize! That's the key to reach your goals!

Have you guys watched the movie called "The Secret"? The post below reminded me of that movie. It's not easy to visualize things that in your mind seems to be so intangible.

http://tightbodybootcamp.blogspot.com/2010/11/visualization-can-you-see-what-im.html

I do believe that when you stick something in your mind very strongly, anything can come true.

I would never thought I would become fluent in Japanese and end up being a Japanese teacher. Nineteen years ago, I landed in a new country called Japan, I understood nothing about the Language and cried everyday on my way back to school wishing that I would go back to Brazil on the next day. Day after that I was doing the same thing, crying, crying and complaining. I was only focusing on the negative side and not on the positive side hindering myself to accept new challenges and to learn the new language that was around me all the time.

After a year being in Japan and knowing just a few phrases in Japanese, I decided that I had to change my mind. I decided that I would become SOMEONE in the future. SOMEONE that would be fluent in Japanese and that would help learners who wanted to learn and acquire this mysterious, but beautiful language that is Japanese.

In order to reach that goal, I visualized myself going to College and after wards being hired as a new Japanese teacher. At that time sounded impossible to someone like me reach that goal, someone that could not even write and read in Japanese well.

But here I am, teaching Japanese in English and very happy about my career that was a dream 18 years ago.

I am so grateful I could visualize myself, dreaming about my goals and becoming what I am now.

I learned that nothing, absolutely nothing, in life comes easily. And now I am grateful for that. I am grateful that I could learn how to work hard and to believe in me.

Who said that it would be easy? But SOMEONE up there said that it would be worth it!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Some tips for term 2

みなさん、こんにちは!

We just finished the first 2 days of the Second Term. Those who are taking Japanese for the first time, hopefully you guys got an idea how to study for Japanese from now on.

I just want to share some tips with you. That was the way I learned English and Japanese.

1) After going home, I used to check my notes to see what I learned during the day. If I had any questions, I used to write those on my notebook and ask my teachers on the following day. Don't be ashamed to ask questions!!!!!

2) This tip was a very time consuming one, but helped me a lot to improve my language skills. I used to have 2 notebooks. One to use in the classroom and another one that I left at home just for me to practice. Before quizzes and tests, I used to re-write everything I learned in my second notebook. Things like grammar, examples to use the grammar, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji.

3) In order to become fluent and better in a foreing language, I believe you have to study everyday for at least 5 minutes. Say things out loud at home, practice Hiragana, katakana or Kanji using your flashcards (You can even look at them during your favorite show's commercial), write the objects of your room/house in Japanese and stick on it for you to read everyday, watch TV shows, drama or anime in Japanese online and listen to Japanese music. Any of those activities would work!!!!

Some websites you can use:
http://www.mysoju.com/
http://www.hikyaku.com/manga/mangag.html
http://hellojapan.wordpress.com/2008/03/29/nihongo-dekimasu-erin-ga-choosen-tv-course-download/
http://nihongo-dekimasu.blogspot.com/search/label/Nihongo%20Dekimasu
http://www.japanaradio.com/

4) Don't procrastinate!!! If you are learning a new Hiragana, Katakana or Kanji and you know you are going to have a quiz eventually, begin STUDYING now, don't leave to study everything one day before!!! REMEMBER you may have other assignments form your other classes and you'll not be able to study as much.

5) If you didn't do very well during first term, it doesn't mean you are not going to do well on the second term!!!!! NEVER, give up!!!!!

みなさん、がんばってください〔Everyone, hang in there!]

How are you learning Japanese?

Please post here some of your learning ideas on Japanese vocabulary and hiragana. I've noticed that some of my Japanese 1 students are struggling trying to learn Hiragana and I would like to know how you guys are practicing learning it. Your learning style may help your classmates, so please post here!!!!

Japanese Club ideas

If you have any ideas of what you would like to do for Japanese Club, please post here!!!

Today we had a meeting with our Club presidency and some of the ideas for this month were:

1) Go to a Karate doojo to learn Karate for free from a real Karate's sensei (One of our Club representatives has a black belt)

2) Japanese Sports festival (Activities such as tsunahiki (tag of war), tamaire game, kibasen (cavalry battle), creative dance, and lots more)

3) Learn how to cook a Japanese food called okonomiyaki

For November
Talent show

For December
White elephant gift exchange

Extra Credit opportunity

The second Monday in October is a Japanese national holiday called Taiikunohi (Health and Sports Day) which commemorates the 1964 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony held on October 10. Various sports events take place on this day, and traditional sports festivals called undoukai are held in many Japanese schools around this holiday. In undoukai, children are usually divided into two teams (red and white) and compete for their teams. Common events include tsunahiki (tag of war), tamaire game, kibasen (cavalry battle), creative dance, and lots more.

BYU is hosting an undoukai on October 23 from 10am to 12pm. All the local high schools have been invited to participate. It is a lot of fun and it is an excellent event to learn more about the Japanese Culture.

I will be there and those who attends this event will get 30 points of extra credit!

Don't miss this incredible opportunity!!!

Extra Credit

One of the extra credit for this term is to attend the Club Night tomorrow. I will give to each one of you 15 points if you come. Make sure you come and talk to me in the beginning and at the end of the event so that I can take roll.

It will be lots of fun. Last year, about 300 people attended. If you want to see last year's event, check the post below.

Good luck to those who made to the final!!!!

World Language Week

Today was the last day for the our World Language Week. It was really fun to have Scavenger Hunt, Culture Bowl and the Movie Competition. A1 and B1 Movies were very hard to choose. The level of the movies are getting higher and I was really impressed!!! Good job, everyone!!!

I will try to post the list of the Culture Bowl finalists here, but those who made to the finals, make sure to come tomorrow to Club Night at 6:45pm. The event is going to start at 7pm with the Culture Bowl.

After the Culture Bowl, we are eating yummy deserts and then you will watch the movies that made to the Final. We, teachers, are going to discuss about the movies tomorrow after school and then we will decide the best 10 to give the cash prizes away for those who made to the Final. I have a STRONG feeling that will be very hard to decide on the first, second and third prizes.

Remember that we are going to have regular classes from tomorrow.
