Today is the last day for TERM 1!!!

みなさん こんにちは!!!!

You did it!!! Today is the last day of the term.

Lots of people came to hand in their late homework and also to retake quizzes. I could see lots of improvement!! Good job, guys!!!

Japanese 1

Finished Chapter 1 and 2 and they have learned all the Hiragana!!! We just had our last Hiragana quiz and the average was 12 out of 15!!!! I am so proud of you guys!!!!

Japanese 2

Finished Chapter 1, learned Kanji for numbers and days of the week and took the big test and you guys did pretty well. The average was 25 out of 30!!!!!!

They learned 12 new Kanji from Chapter 1 and lots of new and hard grammar.

Average for Kanji Test 32 ou of 40.
Average for Chapter 1 test 31 out of 40.

1/3 of the class skipped Japanese 2 and most of them are following pretty well. Those who feel that you are still struggling, make sure to come and talk to me before class so that we can come up with some learning strategies. I am here to help you guys!!!!!!!!! I'd love to help ANYONE who wants to learn!!

Japanese 4

Since we just got our textbook end of September, we did lots of review from Japanese 3, practiced Kanji from Japanese 2 and 3 (total 219 Kanji), did some practice using AP tests exercises and watched Japanese drama. We finally started Chapter 1 from our book and they learned the 3 types of KEIGO (Polite Japanese) and the difference between there. Japanese 1 & 2 focuses on Desu & Masu style, Japanese 3 informal Japanese and Japanese 4 Business Japanese.

Average for Big Kanji test 34 out of 42

I know that it has been a big step to some of you guys, but I can see that everyone is trying very hard to suceed in this class. Thank you for all your example!!!

ESL

After observing and testing everyone, we divided our class in low and high intermediate.
They presented about a movie they liked everything in English and we discussed a little about each movie.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR WORKING SO HARD DURING FIRST TERM!!!!!

SOME ADVICE FOR TERM 2

1) WHEN YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK, EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOME PARTS, TRY TO DO IT!!!! NEVER GIVE UP!!! REMEMBER THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME IS TO SEE EVERYONE TRYING AND NOT TO DO THE HOMEWORK PERFECTLY. IF YOU DON'T TRY YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW AND WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW. SOMETIMES YOU THINK YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, BUT THERE ARE ALWAYS SOME THINGS YOU KNOW.

2) TURN IN ANY ASSIGNMENT ON TIME!!!!!!!

3) CHECK OUR BLOG DAILY TO SEE YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!!

4) BRING YOUR BOOKS, NOTEBOOKS AND PENCIL/PENS. THOSE COUNT TOWARD YOUR DAILY GRADE.

5) TAKE NOTES IN CLASS! AS I MENTIONED IN CLASS, THE EXPLANATION YOU HAVE IN YOUR BOOK SOMETIMES IS COMPLICATED, SO WRITE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK THE WAY YOU UNDERSTAND FROM WHAT I EXPLAINED IN CLASS.

がんばってください!!!!! (Good luck)

Want to watch Anime, Drama or TV shows from Japan?

There are some good websites online you can go and watch Japanese anime, drama or TV shows.

When I was learning English in Japan, I thought that only class instruction was not enough for me, so I started watching lots of American TV shows. I tried to watch everyday for at least 20 minutes a day. After a couple of months, my listening skills got better and I could remember some expressions that had been said over and over again. Some of them were really simple like [ What's up?] [I don't get it] 「Go away」、etc. Some of those expressions we don't learn at school and it was very useful for me to know.

My major in College was Japanese teaching and my minor was English. It was my dream to come to America one day and go to a college or graduate school. Finally, when I was 22 years old, my dream came true. I could come to BYU for Graduate School where I got a MA in Japanese Language Acquisition and Teaching + a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate.

Thinking back, all that American TV shows that I used to watch everyday helped me a lot!!! I could not afford to be an exchange student and go to English Speaking countries to practice my English, so those TV shows were free and I could imagine myself speaking English through the TV.

There are some good websites that you can try:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/

http://kimamaniyoutube.blog78.fc2.com/blog-entry-94.html

http://www.mysoju.com/

http://www.jdorama.com/

http://www.watchanimeon.com/

And of course you can always go to http://youtube.com/ and search for a variety of Japanese TV shows.

If you want to become fluent in Japanese, you have to practice by yourself and work hard. Remember that nothing comes easily to life.
